THE CAPITOL, TALLAHASSEE, Sept. 2, 2010....GOP gubernatorial pick Rick Scott embraced political insider state Rep. Jennifer Carroll as his running mate Thursday after days of speculation that the outsider candidate may select the veteran politician as his lieutenant governor pick.

Carroll, the lone black Republican in the Florida Legislature, gives Scott something he can't buy – a relationship with many of the party's power players and knowledge of the ins and outs of the state capitol corridor. She is ranked highly by Republican-fueled lobbying groups like the Florida Chamber of Commerce and Associated Industries of Florida. She has also served as a whip in the Florida House of Representatives and as the executive director of the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs under former Gov. Jeb Bush.

THE CAPITAL, TALLAHASSEE, Sept. 1, 2010…..Rep. Jennifer Carroll, the lone black Republican in the Florida Legislature and a pro-business Navy veteran is expected to be named GOP gubernatorial nominee Rick Scott’s running mate Thursday.

Those familiar with the selection told the News Service of Florida on Wednesday that Carroll will be introduced by Scott on a three-city fly-around, with a first stop at the Jacksonville Naval Air Station, one of the expected lieutenant governor contender’s postings during her 20-year Navy career.

THE NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA

THE CAPITAL, TALLAHASSEE, Aug. 31, 2010…..Bud Chiles is ending his low-budget, independent campaign for governor – a move most expect to bolster support for Democratic nominee Alex Sink.

Several sources close to Chiles on Tuesday told the News Service of Florida that the son of the late Democratic governor planned to formally announce his decision Thursday, most likely in Tallahassee. It wasn’t immediately clear whether Chiles would endorse Sink – but she is widely seen as the beneficiary of his dropping out of the race.

THE CAPITAL, TALLAHASSEE, Aug. 30, 2010..…. A House panel set up to make sure governments get reimbursed for oil spill damage determined Monday that it’s too early for lawmakerws to take definitive action but urged local governments to vigilantly record spill-related expenses.

Meeting to approve the final draft of its report, the House Deepwater Horizon work group devoted to public sector loss recovery, headed by Rep, Matt Hudson, said it will take a few more months to figure out how much money local governments lost as tourists stayed away and how much they spent on preventative measures to keep oil off their beaches or clean up after it came ashore.

THE NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA

THE CAPITAL, TALLAHASSEE, Aug. 27, 2010……The tea party movement muscled its way into the American political psyche over the past year with huge rallies, angry voters and colorful rhetoric. It’s not clear how much voters are responding, but in Florida, at least, the Republican Party appears to have taken notice.

Nearly all of the statewide candidates on the GOP ticket have embraced – and been embraced by - the tea party movement, the group of disenfranchised, mostly conservative voters who paraded the call for a change from the status quo over the past year, spurred at least in part by opposition to federal health care reform and the Obama administration in general.

THE CAPITAL, TALLAHASSEE, Aug. 26, 2010…Democratic gubernatorial candidate Alex Sink said Thursday that Rick Scott’s past and character will be at the forefront of the governor’s race as she enters the arena, possibly foreshadowing a continuation of some of the same personal negativity that marked the primary.

Speaking to reporters following Thursday’s meeting of the governor and Cabinet, Florida’s Chief Financial Officer said she will continue to ask Scott to explain his leadership at health care giant Columbia/HCA and later at Solantic, a Jacksonville-based urgent care company he help found and in which he remains a primary investor.

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. Aug. 25, 2010…The Florida Republican establishment began digging out from the wreckage of the Bill McCollum campaign Wednesday, searching for a political foothold after being rocked by maverick, self-funder Rick Scott’s victory in the GOP primary for governor.

Following his 46-43 percent victory over McCollum, with self-styled candidate Mike McCalister drawing a surprising 10 percent of the GOP vote, Scott seemed intent on keeping his `party-of-one’ style.

There was no victory tour; no major public appearances or statements.

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. Aug. 24, 2010…Powered by a $50 million, self-financed campaign, Rick Scott upended the Florida Republican establishment Tuesday, defeating Attorney General Bill McCollum for the GOP gubernatorial nomination following the most expensive and one of the most bitter primary battles in state history.

Scott emerges as a candidate who effectively is a party of one – having run against the GOP leadership and even airing hard-hitting TV ads which tarred McCollum’s ties to indicted former Florida Republican Party Chairman Jim Greer.

THE NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA

THE CAPITAL, TALLAHASSEE, Aug. 23, 2010…..Fueled by a stratospheric $100 million in spending, candidates topping the primary ballot Monday barnstormed the state in a last-ditch push for voters – with polls showing the Republican governor’s contest tightening and the Democratic battle for U.S. Senate tilting decidedly toward U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek.

When they were not sign-waving on street corners or huddling with small groups of voters, candidates up and down Tuesday’s ballot relied on automated, celebrity phone-calling to nudge Floridians toward the polls. Republican attorney general candidate Holly Benson, trailing in a crowded field, was christened a “proven conservative,” by former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich in calls to supporters.

PANAMA CITY, Fla., Aug. 21, 2010..........If Panama City resident Leon Delikat is any indication, Attorney General Bill McCollum’s focus on Rick Scott’s history with Columbia Healthcare/HCA in their contentious primary for the Republican gubernatorial nomination will not carry McCollum to victory Tuesday.

Delikat, who attended a Scott campaign rally in downtown Panama City Saturday, said there have been so many charges in the harsh GOP primary that it is hard to determine which ones to believe.

THE CAPITAL, TALLAHASSEE, Aug. 19, 2010….Early voting appears to be catching on, according to a survey of elections supervisors who say that the millions of dollars spent on gubernatorial and U.S. Senate races may be raising turnout across the state.

With next Tuesday’s primary bearing down, supervisors reached by the News Service of Florida say early voting numbers are up from 2008, an increase they attribute to high-profile statewide races and some heated local contests.

THE CAPITAL, TALLAHASSEE, Aug. 18, 2010... House Speaker Designate Dean Cannon went to the Florida Supreme Court on Wednesday to defend the Legislature’s attempt to blunt a pair of ballot measures that could threaten the Republican Party’s grip on the Legislature and congressional delegation.

In a rare move by an elected official, Cannon, who is also a lawyer, appeared before justices to argue in favor of keeping proposed constitutional Amendment 7 on the November ballot. He said the measure is needed to assure that minorities can maintain representation in the Legislature and Congress when voting district boundaries are redrawn in 2012.

THE CAPITAL, TALLAHASSEE, Aug. 16, 2010…… Gov. Charlie Crist’s U.S. Senate campaign is returning nearly $10,000 in contributions from indicted former state Republican Party Chairman Jim Greer, who asked for the refund because he needs the money.

Crist campaign Press Secretary Danny Kanner said in an E-mail to the News Service on Monday that the campaign is in the process of sending the money back to Greer, who faces grand theft, money laundering and attempted fraud charges in connection with his time as chairman of the state party. Greer is accused of funelling party money to himself by hiring his own company as a fundraising consultant for the party.

LAKELAND, Fla., Aug. 12, 2010.....If Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Kendrick Meek is going to win his tight Aug. 24 win primary with wealthy real estate mogul Jeff Greene, he needs as many voters as possible to think like Dennis Quisenberry.

Quisenberry, a Davenport resident who came to hear Meek address members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union in Lakeland this week, says his mind is firmly made up to vote for Meek. And no amount of television commercials from Greene, who has spent at least $6 million out-of-pocket to draw nearly even with Meek in public polls, can change it.
